ISO 50001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015, Energy management systems and Enviromental management systems– Requirements with guidance for use, are voluntary International Standards developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization). ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 give organizations the requirements for energy management systems (EnMS) and environmental management systems (EMS). ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 provide benefits for organizations large and small, in both public and private sectors, in manufacturing and services, in all regions of the world
According to the ISO standards, organizations should establish a programme to evaluate periodically on its management system implementation and check the effectiveness of the system in fulfilling their policy. The programme should include the scope and frequency of the audits.
The internal audit evaluates the processes, procedures and implementation of the management system to determine if they are appropriate to the organization, implementation status and conforming to requirements of the ISO standards. It helps identify nonconformities and opportunities for improvement of the management systems. In practice, it can be performed by either internal or external persons, as long as they are competent, impartial and objective in conducting the management system audit. At the end of the audit, proper records should be maintained and submitted to management for review.
In general, the audit programme and procedures should cover:
• specific activities / areas of the management system to be audited;
• frequency of audits (different elements of the management system may be audited at different frequencies);
• responsibilities and selection of auditor(s);
• communication of audit results;
• auditor competence; and
• process of conducting audits
